The Climate Conference in Paris in December 2015 gave hope for the future.

In order to keep temperature under 2 degrees C, there is an urgent need for immediate action. In addition to reducing emissions, mitigating CO2 already in the atmosphere is equally important. Protecting the world’s rain forests and restoring lost mangrove forests are essential in reaching the desired goals.

One of the countries with the greatest need for mangrove restoration is Myanmar. Worldview International Foundation’s pioneering project “Thor Heyerdahl Climate Park” with 2 million new trees and millions more to come, is an example of practical solutions to the biggest challenge in our time.

I have been witnessing the remarkable transformation of WIF from pioneering sustainable development communication and public education at the dawn of the communication revolution in the early 1980ies. to focusing on natural climate solutions at a crucial time for urgent climate action. By planting 100 million trees of mangroves, several destroyed forests have been restored. This will capture 50 million tons of CO2 over the next 25 years. This figure is similar to the annual emissions of CO2 in Norway. And there is more. In addition to coastal protection and enriching flora and fauna in the restored areas, over 100 vulnerable coastal communities have received livelihoods and sustainable development support. I wish WIF the best of luck in expanding this extremely efficient and important work in securing the future of our grandchildren.
